  THE AMERICAN COCKER SPANIEL
Why we love this breed ~ The breed's attractive coloring and charming personality wins over many hearts. They're known as the merry Cocker Spaniel and comes in a range of colors from all black, buff, chocolate to parti or tri colors and even rare colors like sable, roan and merle. The Cocker has a beautiful long flowing coat and long ears along with their beautiful expression that only a Cocker could have. Their merry personality has endeared many. The American Cocker Spaniel's build is sturdy and compact and has a double coat which helped protect it when in the field hunting. They are happy, very loyal, and quick to learn. The AKC standard height would be 14 inches high for the females and 15 inches high for the males. Weight can be 17 to 23 pounds.

CARE OF THE COCKER SPANIEL
Many Cocker owners choose to keep their cockers shaved or in a puppy cut which makes the maintenance easier and keeps your dog cooler in the summer. Keeping your cocker in a longer coat requires more brushing. Keeping your cocker's coat neat and clean takes a little time but is well worth the effort. Cockers need frequent baths. Before bathing your dog make sure it is completely brushed out and free of any tangles. Any mats left in the coat will only get worse when wet. There are many high quality shampoos and conditioners on the market to use for bathing. With any shampoo, be sure to lather and rinse thoroughly. Towel dry and use a hair dryer to dry the hair. Ear cleaning should be done often since the long ears on the Cocker does not let air into the ear. A good quality ear wash can be purchased at a pet store or from your vet. Pour the ear wash into the ear and swash it around then wipe out the ear with a soft cloth or cotton balls. If you notice an odor or dark discharge then have it checked by your vet. Regular toe nail trimming is vital. Trim the end of the toe nail where it curves but avoid the pink quick. If you cut back too far then it will bleed. If it should bleed then dab with styptic powder or a piece of paper towel pressed close to nail until the bleeding has stopped. Keep hair trimmed out between foot pads so dirt will not cake in between their pads. Take your Cocker for vet checks and vaccines and you should have a wonderful new family member. Hope you will enjoy your new puppy.
